  • CPT and ICD-9 coding experience
  • Knowledge of insurance guidelines, including Medicare and Medicaid
  • Computer skills, including medical billing software technologies

When searching for medical billing and coding jobs, a typical medical coding specialist job will require certification that you earned through a medical billing and coding school or program and usually a minimum of one year of experience. Some of the requirements for a medical coding specialist job may include:

  • Certification as a Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Accreditation (RHIT) or Registration (RHIA) with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • Previous medical coding experience (inpatient billing and/or outpatient billing), patient account billing, and insurance company denials and resolution

The medical coding specialist position will require a RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P, CCS, CPC or CPC-H.
